-서론-
어린이는 국가와 민족의 장래를 이어나갈 귀중한 존재이므로 그들의 심신을 보호 육성하
여 건강하고 아름답게 성장하도록 힘써야 하는 것이 우리들의 의무이다. 한편 영유아 보건
의 우열이 국가 번영의 중요한 척도가 된다는데 대하여는 더 이상 재언을 요하지 않는다.
사실상 국민 보건을 향상시키는데 있어서 영유아의 신체발육 상태를 정확하게 파악한다는
것은 언제나 필수 조건이 된다. 특히 영아의 특성이 성장이라는데 있으니 만큼 영아의 신체
발육 상태가 차지하는 비중은 막중한 것이라고 아니할 수 없다.
우리 인간은 세상에 태어날 때부터 영아기(출생부터 만 1세 미만)를 거쳐 유아기(1∼6세),
아동기(6∼12세), 소년기, 청년기, 노년기로 구분하여 성장발육을 하게 되는데 보통 영아기인
출생부터 1세까지는 일생을 통해 가장 왕성한 성장발육을 한다. 남녀아 다같이 출생시 대략
신장이 평균 50cm부터 만 1세에 80cm로 자라고, 체중은 평균 3kg 내외에서 10kg으로 왕성
한 증가를 보여주는 영유아 보건의 우열이 국가 번영 여부의 중요한 척도가 되므로, 급속히
성장하는 영유아 발육의 판정에 있어서 발육치는 절대 불가결한 기본이 된다. 국가의 인구
정책 또는 식량정책이 과연 소아의 발육 및 영양에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 조사, 연구함
에 있어서도 소아발육치는 중요한 기본자료가 되는 것이다.

The height and weight of infants who were born in 1994 and registered on Kyung
Hee Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics were measured from birth to 12 months of
age and recorded for each infant’s age, sex, body height and weight respectively. The
physical and nutritional indices were evaluated based on above growth data. The total
numbers were 10,681 comprising 5,449 males, 5,232 females.
The result obtained are as follows:
The average height at birth was 50.0±2.2cm in male and 50.0±2.0cm in female. The
average height at 12 month of age was 82.0±5.4cm in male and 81.0± 3.7cm in female.
The average increase of height from birth to 12 months of age was 32.0cm in male
and 31.0cm in female. The average weight at birth was 3.3 ±0.4kg in male and 3.2±0.4kg in female. The average weight at 12 month of age was 10.6± 1.4kg in male and 10.1± 1.2kg in female. The average increase of weight from birth to 12 months of age was 7.3kg in male and 6.9kg in female. The relative weight was increased continuously from birth to 12 months of age as they grew older in both sexes. The R hrer index was decreased continuously from birth to 12 months of age as they grew older in both sexes.
The Kaup index showed the same pattern as the R hrer index.
